EXC 259: Intelligente Grenzflächen: Verständnis und Gestaltung von Strömungsberandungen

Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Das Exzellenzcluster ‘Intelligente Grenzflächen: Verständnis und Gestaltung von Strömungsberandungen’ widmete sich Grenzen zwischen fluiden Phasen und festen Wänden, die gezielt entworfen und gefertigt werden, um eine Verbesserung oder Steuerbarkeit eines Massen-, Impuls- oder Wärmetransports zu erreichen. Die Ziele zur Schaffung ‘Intelligenter Grenzflächen’ richteten sich hauptsächlich nach folgenden Schritten aus: Verstehen – Modellieren – Steuern – Optimieren – Entwerfen – Anwenden. ‘Intelligente Grenzflächen’ sind von großer technologischer Bedeutung und finden Anwendung in vielen ingenieurtechnischen Bereichen, einschließlich der Verkehrs-, Energie-, Umwelt-, Chemie-, Verfahrensund Produktionstechnik. Organisatorisch war der Cluster in Form des Center of Smart Interfaces (CSI) an der Technischen Universität Darmstadt realisiert. Er integrierte die Antragstellenden, neu berufene Professoren und Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und - wissenschaftler aus fünf Fachbereichen der Technischen Universität Darmstadt (Chemie, Mathematik, Materialwissenschaften, Maschinenbau, Physik) sowie aus vier benachbarten, außeruniversitären Institutionen. Das Forschungsprogramm umfasste fünf miteinander verbundene Forschungsbereiche: Statische und dynamische Benetzbarkeit, Intensivierung von Wärmetransport, Wandnahe reaktive Strömungen, Strömungen und Transport an wandnahen Grenzflächen sowie Steuerung von Widerstand und Zirkulation. Der Schwerpunkt lag auf der Grundlagenforschung, jedoch wurden enge Verbindungen mit der Industrie aufgebaut, die einen effizienten Wissenstransfer aus dem akademischen Umfeld in die Praxis ermöglichen. Die aktive Organisation zahlreicher Konferenzen, Workshops und Seminare unterstützte den Austausch mit Kollegen und gab wichtige Impulse für neue Ideen und aufstrebende Technologien. Ein charakteristisches Merkmal des Center of Smart Interfaces ist das außergewöhnlich hohe Maß an interdisziplinärer Forschung, der die zielgerichtete Förderung gemeinsam verfasster Anträge, die zentrale Planung und Abwicklung von Investitionen sowie die Nähe aller Forscher zueinander in einem neuen Gebäude besonders förderlich waren. Dieses anregende Forschungsumfeld wurde ergänzt durch ein umfassendes, internationales Austauschprogramm, das sowohl die Ebene der Professoren und etablierten Forscherinnen und Forscher (‘CSI Fellowships’) als auch die der Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden umfasste. Mit dem Ende der Auslauffinanzierung wurden mehr als 100 Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden, die am CSI betreut wurden, promoviert und es waren mehr als 50 Postdoktorandinnen und -doktoranden am CSI beschäftigt. Innerhalb der Universität bildet das Center of Smart Interfaces den Kern des langfristig angelegten Forschungsclusters Thermo-Fluiddynamik und Verbrennungstechnologie, das mehr als 30 Professoren und Professorinnen sowie etablierte Forscherinnen und Forscher umfasst.
