Strömungsmechanik, Technische Thermodynamik und Thermische Energietechnik
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Computational Engineering (CE), d.h. die computergestützte Modellierung, Analysis, Simulation und Optimierung, bietet eine kostengünstige, effiziente und nachhaltige Alternative, Ingenieuranwendungen zu untersuchen und neue technische Lösungen zu entwickeln, da experimentelle Studien oft zu komplex, zu gefährlich oder zu kostspielig sind. CE ermöglicht die Erstellung von skalierbaren Modellen, um die Erforschung, die Entwicklung, das Design, die Konstruktion, die Bewertung, die Produktion und die Funktion von Ingenieuranwendungen zu unterstützen, die für zentrale Fragen der technischen Entwicklung in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft, z.B. in den Gebieten Energie, Gesundheit, Sicherheit und Mobilität, von entscheidender Bedeutung sind. Die Komplexität solcher Anwendungen nimmt stetig zu, so dass auch die zur Untersuchung erforderlichen Methoden immer anspruchsvoller werden. Durch die Graduiertenschule CE (GSC CE) konnte die TU Darmstadt ihre Rolle im Bereich CE weiter stärken. Doktoranden können ihre wissenschaftlichen Fähigkeiten fokussiert und in enger Zusammenarbeit in einem stimulierenden interdisziplinären Umfeld unter Interaktion von Informatik, Mathematik und Ingenieurwissenschaften stärken und weiterentwickeln. Partnerschaften mit renommierten Forschungseinrichtungen sowie Industriekooperationen verstärken die Wirkung. Darüber hinaus trug die GSC CE spürbar zur strukturellen Entwicklung der TU Darmstadt bei, indem sie CE als Forschungsdisziplin weiter profilierte und als Pilot- Institution zur strukturierten Doktorandenausbildung diente. Basierend auf etablierten Forschungskompetenzen und Ergebnissen der ersten Programmphase, fokussierte sich die Graduiertenschule auf folgende Schlüsselgebiete: Modellierung und Simulation gekoppelter multi-physikalischer Probleme, simulationsbasierte Optimierung und hierarchische mehrskalige Modellierung. Die Forschungsarbeiten wurden durch Entwicklungen in Querschnittsbereichen begleitet: Visualisierung und Simulierte Realität, Hochleistungsrechnen, Verifikation und Validierung sowie Software Engineering. Die Doktoranden arbeiteten im Rahmen von Forschungsschwerpunkten, die ein oder mehrere der obigen Themen betreffen, zusammen. Die Graduiertenschule nimmt eine Schlüsselposition in einer umfassenden CE-Initiative ein, die die TU Darmstadt bereits im Jahr 2000 gestartet hat. Mit den Bachelor/Master-Programmen CE und einer Reihe von Graduiertenkollegs, Forschergruppen und Sonderforschungsbereichen ist die Graduiertenschule in ein exzellentes Umfeld eingebettet. Der signifikante Ausbau der Hochleistungsrechnerkapazitäten und -kompetenzen an der TU Darmstadt trug zu einer weiteren wesentlichen Stärkung dieses Umfeldes bei. In 2018 wurde die GSC CE in das neu gegründete Zentrum für Computational Engineering (CCE) der TU Darmstadt integriert, das als eine dauerhaftere institutionelle Struktur angelegt ist und alle CE-Aktivitäten in Forschung und Lehre koordiniert.
