The project investigates the function and significance of the "Theorie-Reihe" founded in 1966 by Siegfried Unseld at Suhrkamp Verlag for the intellectual discourse of the 1960s and 1970s. Until 1986 the publishing house implemented one of the most demanding humanities programs in the Federal Republic of Germany, whereby the close cooperation with the editors Jürgen Habermas, Dieter Henrich, Jacob Taubes, Hans Blumenberg and later Niklas Luhmann was decisive. We asked ourselves the following key questions in the project: - What were the goals of the publishing house and how were its decision-making structures organized, both in the form of the participation of Siegfried Unseld and the editor Karl Markus Michel?- Which internal and strategic constellations, represented vis-à-vis the publisher, shaped the group of editors, in which Jürgen Habermas and Dieter Henrich in particular set the tone?- How is the communication of the politics of ideas between the group of editors and the publisher to be assessed? Did the editors and the publisher develop an intellectual physiognomy with the programming of the series, or did the project add up individual positions in science policy that the editors assumed in their role as prominent in-house authors of the publisher?- How was the academic and other public reception of the theory series?
