Sergei Eisenstein’s filming practices were closely related to his theoretical thinking. In 1929, he planned to write a “spherical book” without a beginning or an end. This vision came into being in an obsessive work in progress where Eisenstein employed montage as a mode of theory. Elena Vogman explores the “sensuous thought” in Eisenstein’s Method, only recently published in Russian. Based on intensive archival research, the study follows Eisenstein’s aesthetic and epistemological method, providing an innovative introduction to the filmmaker's theoretical opus magnum.
