Transport and mixing in parametrically excited fluid layers

In the proposed project, we want to compare experimental and numerical results on surface waves in circular channels. The waves are generated by a moving barrier or an azimuthal vibration of the channel. The investigations fall into the class of parametrically generated waves, which play an important role in many areas of mechanics. The project proposed here can be seen as a natural extension of a pilot project carried out at the DFG Core Facility Center "Physics of Rotating Flows" at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. An experiment was used which was originally set up for the DFG research group "MS-GWaves". The project proposed here will investigate transport and mixing in the context of nonlinear surface waves. The focus will be on the collision of bores, bores in bilayer systems, and the generation of nonlinear waves by an asymmetric forcing. From the dynamical point of view, bores are closely related to tsunamis. They are generally not as dangerous but they occur much more frequently and are important for sediment transport in rivers and fisheries in estuaries. Given the many applications in environmental research, it is important to collect and compare more experimental and numerical data for a better understanding.
