Pericytes – a common link in the comorbidity of vascular impairment and Alzheimer’s Disease
Final Report Abstract
In our Neurovascular Cell Biology and Dysfunction research group, we focus on neurodegenerative diseases and their impact on the immune system within the central nervous system. As outlined in my research concept submitted for the Emmy Noether grant, our primary focus is on the interplay between vascular system damage and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Autopsy statistics show a significant overlap between the classic core features of AD and vascular diseases such as stroke or vascular dementia. The frequency of these overlaps is remarkably high, affecting over 80% of all dementia patients. For this reason, we investigate various aspects of the interaction between these two pathologies. Our research in this area can be divided into two main aspects: • The comorbidity of Alzheimer’s disease and stroke • Vascular impairments in Alzheimer’s disease Additionally, we examine the effects of strokes on the cells of the neurovascular unit. Our goal is to develop a better understanding of the complex interactions between neurovascular damage and neurodegenerative processes and to identify new approaches for diagnosis and therapy.
