Post-transcriptional processes have recently been shown to play significant roles in adapting protein abundance in transitions from growth to immunity in plants. Phytohormones are known to govern most aspects of these steady states and their transitions. Here we propose a targeted multi-omics approach with a primary focus on targeted proteomics measurements of protein turn-over rates. We will investigate the chronology of transcriptional, post-transcriptional/translational and post-translational (protein degradation) processes of SA, JA, ET and auxin interaction in the establishment and transition of and between growth and immunity. We will also examine if altered degradation rates of abundant photosynthetic and primary metabolic enzymes are involved in remodeling the cellular proteome as a whole in the transition from growth to immunity. These questions are important to an understanding of the growth defense trade-off in plants.
