Dynamics of rock dehydration on multiple scales (C09)

Subject Area Mathematics
Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry
Term since 2018
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 235221301

The overall goal of this interdisciplinary project is to understand the scaling properties of the processes related to rock dehydration and the interaction of their underlying mechanisms on multiple time and length scales. Based on the theory of porous media we aim to develop a model suited to capture the transition from forming a fluid-filled porosity via veining to the emergence, propagation, and interplay of porosity waves and fluid-pressure driven fracturing. By applying tools from the theory of evolutionary Gamma-convergence and homogenization we will bridge spatial and temporal scales. The resulting models will be implemented numerically and the simulations will be validated with field data.
