Coordination Proposal Priority Programme 2130 "Cultures of early Modern Translation"

Subject Area German Medieval Studies (Medieval German Literature)
Term since 2018
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 407329483

Questions of translation are essential for a functioning, cooperating society, for a successful communication, including matters of scientific progress, ecologic perspectives and economic trading relations. The SPP 2130 deals with problems, chances and consequences of cultural translation and offers up-to-date discussions an historic frame of reference as well as potential comparative figures. With the Early Modern period an epoch of human history is focussed that faced globalisation for the first time. General principles of society which have been developed from the 15th century on molded patterns of perception and communication that are still valid in our times. To reveal these interrelations comprehensively - Anglo-American scholars currently discuss the topic from a postcolonial perspective -, is the challenge of the given project. We will raise awareness of the issues of translation in our times and reflect strategies of coping with interlingual and intercultural questions of communication from a historic perspective. With regard to the present translational turn our research programme will also provide new orientation for cultural studies. To comprehend and reconstruct the concepts and practices of translating in Early Modern times is of extraordinary significance. To explore the complex phenomenons thoroughly is the aim of the SPP 2130. Translating is understood as a pivotal and ubiquitous cultural technique of the epoch in question.
