Final Report Abstract

The project analyzes the hybridization of documentary and fictional narration that has been prominent in various media dispositifs since the 2000s. Based on the observation that this mode of narration is repeatedly described in research discourse as a 'borderline', it draws on the concept of liminality developed by Victor Turner as a way of describing threshold phenomena and thus analyzes texts that proceed in a docufictional manner in terms of their relationship to conventionalized categories of the cultural order that regulate the communicative system. By either normalizing or denormalizing the demarcations between opposing theoretical, semiotic, cultural, aesthetic, and ethical categories in different gradual gradations, docufictional texts make the culturally drawn border visible as a zone in which 'the real' is made visible as a permanent mass of negotiation.
