The main goal of the project is to study the ultrafast spin dynamics of electrons and excitons in colloidal or sputtered quantum dots embedded in optical cavities in the strong coupling regime. II-VI materials, such as CdSe or ZnO are investigated due to their large exciton binding energy and high confining potentials. Therefore, the possible operation of these devices at room temperature may be envisioned. Isotope-engineered colloidal ZnO quantum dots are used to investigate spin dephasing due to only a few nuclear spins. The ultrafast spin dynamics in magnetically doped ZnO quantum dots and recently developed magnetic ZnO sol-gel thin films is explored.
