Methods and Inequality. Secondary Analyses on the Meaning of Social Differences in Qualitative Research Interviews
Sociological Theory
Final Report Abstract
The present project is a continuation of the project "Questions in qualitative interviews". The central research interest was the question of how (and which) social (inequality) characteristics can affect the type of answers in qualitative interviews. On the one hand, social differences were understood intersectionally (with the focus on education and gender). On the other hand, it was assumed that corresponding differences are not effective "in themselves" but are only made relevant in and through interactions. For this reason, the interactive production of differences and affiliations was also taken into account in the interview, as far as this was possible. As in the previous project, the central textual feature investigated was the text types generated in respondents' answers and verifiable there. These were examined using different forms of analysis, ranging from simple identifications and descriptions (of text types) to elaborate sequence analyses of longer interview interactions. Once again, interview transcripts stored in social science data archives were used as data material, which were analyzed with regard to the aforementioned relations.
