Since its foundation in 2012, the sub\urban project has developed into one of the most im-portant publishing organs of interdisciplinary urban research in the German-speaking context. The journal contributes significantly to the exchange in and between different fields of knowledge as well as to the quality assurance of the scientific debate. It is firmly embedded in existing research and teaching structures and at the same time an independent project sup-ported by an editorial team based in different locations. The aim of the journal is to exchange positions and perspectives of urban research through open access. Since the first issue in 2013, sub\urban has contributed to bring together previously separate strands of debates and to open up new discourses, with the magazine providing numerous impulses of its own. The number of visitors, citations and feedback from readers, authors and the international ad-visory board show that sub\urban is an established journal which has become indispensa-ble for interdisciplinary German-speaking urban research. Our open-access strategy ensures free access to published articles. This makes sub\urban a pioneer for the German-language journal segment, in which sustainable open-access struc-tures are still largely under construction. Through the DFG's support, it was possible to facili-tate the editorial staff's voluntary work by providing professional proofreading and typesetting services and to guarantee high quality publication.A second funding period is intended to ensure the financial and organisational sustainability of the project. Central to this is on the one hand the increased acquisition of publication fees and on the other hand a proliferation of sponsoring memberships of the supporting association. The acquisition of open-access funds and sponsoring memberships requires long-term and careful implementation. The aim of sub\urban is to actively participate in the development of online publications, i. e. not only to maintain its own platform, but also to pursue new ways of expanding accessibility in the field of scientific publications (e. g. multimedia presentation of research results, use of social media and online first, release events).
