Investigation of interactions between adsorbent and adsorptive in gas-phase adsorption by simultaneous volumetry and calorimetry

Subject Area Chemical and Thermal Process Engineering
Term from 2018 to 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 411774269

The design of adsorption processes requires thermodynamic data; adsorption isotherms as well as a deep understanding of caloric effects, e.g. adsorption enthalpies. From a scientific point of view the energetic characterisation of molecular adsorption processes, i.e. adsorption mechanisms are of great interest. This comprises the interactions between adsorbed molecules and adsorbent’s surface as well as interactions between molecules in the adsorbed state. The aim of this project is to investigate the type and strength of interactions as well as adsorption mechanisms based on simultaneous measurements of adsorption isotherms and enthalpies. This investigation needs a very systematic choice of adsorbents and adsorptives. The ultimate target is to develop a mathematical model for the calculation of adsorption enthalpies of different adsorptive-adsorbent-combinations. In addition the influence of temperature on adsorption enthalpies will be examined in one system. To realise the project a new measuring device was developed, which is based on a coupling of volumetric measurements of adsorption isotherms and simultaneous calorimetric measurements of adsorption enthalpies.
