Ferrocene-/Ferrocenyl-functionalized Dendrimers: Synthesis, Characterization and their Electrochemical Behavior

Subject Area Inorganic Molecular Chemistry - Synthesis and Characterisation
Term from 2018 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 412881856

Within this project, ferrocene-based dendritic compounds and dendrimers, respectively, featuring ferrocenyl units as end-grafted moieties (compounds 2, 5, 6 and 17–20) will be prepared by applying different synthetic strategies. For their characterization elemental analysis, spectroscopic methods (FT-IR; 1H, 13C{1H} NMR) and high-resolution ESI-TOF mass-spectrometry will be used. If appropriate, the molecular solid state structure of selected species will be determined by single crystal structure analysis. The electrochemical behavior of the prepared compounds will be determined by square-wave (SWV), cyclic (CV) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). To show, if electronic communication occurs in the appropriate mixed-valent species in situ UV-Vis/NIR spectroscopy will be applied. In addition, in situ EPR studies as well as Mößbauer spectroscopic measurements will be carried out. Furthermore, solid state electrochemical studies will be performed in order to understand the validity of the dendritic molecules/ dendrimers toward charge storage applications. The results thereof will be compared with, for example, polyvinyl-ferrocenes, which have been recently prepared within our working group.
