Response of Coastal Barriers and Freshwater Aquifers to Extreme Storm Surges and Flooding (ReFresh)

Subject Area Hydrogeology, Hydrology, Limnology, Urban Water Management, Water Chemistry, Integrated Water Resources Management
Term from 2018 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 415209643

Final Report Year 2024

Final Report Abstract

In summary, the main objectives of the project were achieved and published either in a journal or presented at international conferences. The outcomes help in understanding the physics of breaching and its numerical modeling as well as the implication of barrier breaching/overtopping for intrusion of seawater into coastal aquifers. The experimental investigations will remain as guides and material for future calibration of numerical models for coastal erosion and breaching (e.g. XBeach) and models for groundwater contamination due to saltwater intrusion (e.g. OpenGeoSys). All data are saved on the servers of LWI and can be shared with the scientific community upon request.
