Sustainable Elderly Care. Relevance and Organization of Professional Care Services Considered From a Socio-Ethical Stance
Final Report Abstract
The research project has highlighted the central relevance of unpaid care and nursing work to subsidiary social infrastructures that provide helpful assistance and relief. For this purpose, the concept of double person-centeredness was developed. This concept establishes a state responsibility to protect those in need of care and a subsidiary responsibility of the state for caregivers. A 'caring society' creates - with political responsibility - the conditions for persons to be able to provide committed care, both as private individuals and as professional carers. Carers should experience resilient relationships of solidarity and helpful support (subsidiarity). The research resulted in the formulation of conditions for the success of good care in innovative forms of living and in perspectives on care policy reform. These include, for example, the demand for the introduction of an income-independent transfer income for carers and the establishment of care bases plus (Pflegestützpunkte plus), which promote coordination and networking and provide case and care management under municipal responsibility and - in urban and rural areas - help those entitled to benefits become recipients. Highlights of the project were the top-class expert workshop on June 20, 2022 at the Catholic Academy in Berlin and the publication of the policy paper “Double person centering – key idea for the service mix in home care” in July 2022. In October 2024 the monograph by Dr. Eva Hänselmann was published: “Sustainable geriatric care. Good care in innovative forms of living and care,” in the Society – Ethics – Religion series published by Brill / Schöningh.
