The collection of designs from the GDR era should be developed for research purposes, for the interested public and for effective design research. The data from the stocks in paper form in the depository of the PATON | Thuringia Patent Center in Ilmenau, together with data from the corresponding index cards in the DPMA-IDZ, the information and service center of the German Patent and Trademark Office in Berlin, are to be made available electronically. Only by bringing together the publications of the designs in the "Trademark Journal" and in the later "Trademark and Sample Sheet" in PATON and the index cards and physical samples in the IDZ Berlin an effective use of this information is possible. The booklets, index cards, photos and fabric samples are digitized via an optical scanning process. Using page structure and text analysis methods, these scanned raw data are processed further. The textual data as well as the images from the various sources are merged after a preparation process and indexed by data structuring, including a classification. The results obtained in the project (master scans, bibliographic data, individual images) are continuously stored in the project's internal database. The prepared, ready-to-publish information should be made available to the public and research via suitable interfaces on a permanent basis.Access to this is granted via existing channels:- in machine-readable form through an interface at the project partner Computer Graphics Engineering (GDV) of the Technische Universität Ilmenau in analogy to the Digital Mechanism and Gear Library DMGLIB.- In machine-readable form through an interface at the project partner PATON via the PATONline system, which can now be used to retrieve 43 million patent documents- via the DPMA-Register research system of the DPMA. Here a suitable interface should be developed during the project period. The requirements of the DPMA are not yet available as the data structure has to be developed during the project. In addition, lectures at relevant events and publications in refereed journals or conference proceedings are planned.
