Sigismund's Imperial Rule Reconsidered - Bavaria and the other territories of the Empire

Subject Area Medieval History
Term since 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 417223876

The project “Sigismund’s Imperial Rule Reconsidered - Bavaria and the other territories of the Empire” investigates the political relations between Sigismund of Luxemburg, King and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Bavaria and other territories of the Holy Roman Empire. It combines basic research from auxiliary sciences with cultural-historical research in an innovative perspective. The aim of the project is threefold: 1) to complete and publish the already extensive work on the Regesta for further Regesta Imperii (RI) volumes; 2) to foster innovative research by young scholars for their qualification theses; 3) to share the knowledge gained from basic research to the scientific community and to invite them to joint discussions. In line with these aims, the project is structured in three modules: A: basic research, B: qualification, C: multiplication. The project builds on the methodological approach and research results of a previous project, while shifting the attention to new systematic comparative approaches. The previous project achieved substantial results in its three-years of funding: 1) a fundamental Regesta volume (see appendix 1), 2) a collaboratively authored volume on selected aspects of the research topic (already accepted for a publication with Regesta Imperii Beihefte, see appendices 2 and 3). The importance of the project is also reflected in the successful qualification and placement of some employees in new positions at the universities of Vienna, Innsbruck, and Darmstadt. The close integration of the research teams and the international cooperation have proven to be of fundamental importance for these achievements. The project will continue to be closely integrated into the international editing enterprise Regesta Imperii (RI).
