Hannah Arendt. Critical Edition

Subject Area German Literary and Cultural Studies (Modern German Literature)
History of Philosophy
Term since 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 421689821

Hannah Arendt is one of the most important authors of the 20th century. In the context of political philosophy her work sticks out: Arendt confronts the burden of the tradition and she meets the challenge that a century dominated by violence poses to critical thinking. But up to now, we do not have an edition of her works that corresponds to its importance. We are working on a historical-critical edition of the writings of Hannah Arendt, both the works she published during her lifetime, as well as her archived manuscripts, all in their original languages (German and English). The hybrid edition consists of a printed version published by Wallstein Verlag in Göttingen and a digital version hosted by the Freie Universität in Berlin. The edition makes available for the first time the complete body of Hannah Arendt’s texts, with supporting philological commentary and in the variety of languages in which they were written. In addition to her published works, her archival writings will be prepared digitally in accordance with XML/TEI protocols. For political philosophers, political scientists, and scholars of literature and media, this will open up new avenues of access, analysis, and application. These include innovative forms of navigation, linking and comparison of versions of Arendt’s texts, visualizations of text genealogies, as well as taxonomies characteristic of Arendt’s work.
