Highspeed cell sorter (for S2)

Subject Area Microbiology, Virology and Immunology
Term Funded in 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 426302651

We are currently operating two "high-throughput" cell sorters in our core facility, which were purchased in 2000 and 2005, respectively (one S1 cell sorter and one S2 cell sorter equipped with a biosafety cabinet). For these instruments, which are not fully operational anymore, spare parts and maintenance are no longer available. Therefore we apply for two cell sorters to replace the current instruments. The previous models were unique in their capability to sort cell populations with especially high flow rates. On the one hand, this is crucial for sorts of very rare cell populations. This feature is of critical importance for most of the proposed projects in our application ("Beiblätter Forschung"). On the other hand, high flow rates enable us to extract the full potential from a method established in our lab ("speedenrichment") for pre-enrichment of rare cell populations (e.g. antigen-specific T cells from the naïve T-cell repertoire). For these reasons we seek to replace the former instruments with cell sorters that possess the same hallmarks required for our applications. Furthermore, due to technological advances in the past decades, the described instruments will have multiple features that will enable previously impossible research projects. The cell sorters will be operated within the core facility CyTUM MIH at the campus "Klinikum Rechts der Isar" of the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Due to the centralized structure we included projects in the "Beiblatt Forschung"-section of multiple academic partners from the campus which will rely on our service for their research.
