The bacterial electron-bifurcating benzoyl-CoA reductase complex and its dynamic interaction partners (A03)

Subject Area Biochemistry
Term since 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 403222702

During the degradation of aromatic compounds, the benzoyl-CoA reductase (BCR) catalyses a redox reaction below the negative limit of the biological redox scale. Strictly anaerobic bacteria employ the 1 MDa BCR complex, with more than 50 redox cofactors one of the most complex metalloenzyme machineries in nature, to accomplish this reaction. The project aims to understand how the assembly and dynamic interactions of individual modules achieve electron-bifurcation driven electron transfer and how the membrane interaction partner EMO links the BCR to further metabolic processes.
