Governing Theater: Theater, politics and the public sphere after 1918 in Germany (A04)
Subject Area
Theatre and Media Studies
Term
from 2019 to 2023
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 394775490
The proposed subproject deals with the question of how the relationship between theater, politics and the public was altered between 1918 and 1936 by the abolition of censorship, increased financial support from the public sector and the control of public opinion, here understood to be the press and theater audience. Using two case studies, the Münchner Kammerspiele and the Münchner Residenztheater, the subproject aims to investigate what happens when practices of control and surveillance are shifted directly to institutions on the one hand and to the public on the other
