A third model of democracy

Subject Area Political Science
Term from 2019 to 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 427879639

Final Report Year 2023

Final Report Abstract

The project focused on two concerns: first, to present the richness of the debates surrounding the modern concept of democracy in the period between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries; and second, to overcome a one-sided reading or interpretation of modern democracy that is based on a juxtaposition of direct and representative procedures but loses sight of the systematic and far-reaching involvement of citizens in the state and administration. It has therefore been the guiding thesis of the project that already in the English, American and French Revolutions genuinely motifs of this multi-layered understanding of democracy can be identified, which differs from classical republican models but also from the emerging liberal theories of the time, which were decisively based on constitutional discourses. The aim of the project was to condense the material to be processed in the history of ideas in such a way that the independent character of this new approach as a model of state, society and politics becomes clear.
