„Project Child“: Parents‘ constructions of the gendered child
Final Report Abstract
The project is interested in parents’ ideas about the development of their children, in particular whether ideas about gender are an essential part of their concept of a ‚successful child‘. Interviews were conducted with parents and family photographs provided by them were analyzed in order to reconstruct the parental perspective, the images and patterns of interpretation underlying the socialization and educational practices with regard to the successful development of the child. In addition the project pursues a methodological interest: to explore the potential that the triangulation of verbal and visual data has for family and gender research. Triangulation makes it possible to reconstruct the reciprocal relationship between parental gender-related expectations of success and the children’s gender performances and practices in a more complex way than would be possible with just one type of data. Regardless of the type of family and socio-structural differences, parents’ expectations of success are within the framework of what is described as a good childhood in the discourse of child well-being. Parents see childhood as a phase of life ‚in its own right‘. Besides health and a happy childhood, this includes above all an understanding of children as autonomous, independent actors in their development – and in the case of families with two or more children, a good, harmonious relationship between siblings. The sibling relationship proves to be an essential part of doing family and its success is important for family cohesion. The gender-related expectations of success range from the reproduction of traditional gender-typical notions of order to an explicitly gender-untypical or gender-neutral upbringing. Parents who intend the latter consistently report that their own children are oriented towards gender stereotypes. They are faced with the task of overcoming the challenges that arise from the discrepancy between their own egalitarian demands and the everyday life of their children, who either resist or outright reject the educational efforts aimed at transcending gender stereotypes. Parents must decide which principle they give priority to: the avoidance of socialization that differentiates according to gender, or the recognition of the child as a person whose voice must be taken into account in family negotiations, even if this results in unwanted gender differentiation. The solution to the decision-making dilemma chosen by most parents gives greater weight to the autonomy and well-being of the child than the consistent enforcement of the claim to gender neutrality.
