In recent years, Raman spectroscopy has become an increasingly important tool in modern paleontology and palaeobotany. This is partly due to the nature of the method itself, which is non-destructive, but also to the ability to rapidly get structural and chemical information in situ with a spatial resolution down to the micrometer range. In addition, the method itself has been significantly improved in recent years by new applications that enable the detection and identification of substances in the ppm range by means of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). With the combination of other techniques (Atomic Force Microscopy - AFM) even a spatial resolution beyond the diffraction limit of a few nanometers can be achieved (Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy - TERS). In general, spectra can now be recorded in milliseconds. The DFG Research Unit "The Limits of the Fossil Record: Analytical and Experimental Approaches to Fossilization" (FOR 2685), at the Institute of Geosciences and Meteorology of the University of Bonn, comprises nine individual projects. In all these projects Raman spectroscopy is of varying importance. For these projects, a new Raman system is required not only to meet the increased workload requirements, but also to use a state-of-the-art system that can cross scientific boundaries. This application briefly describes the research interests, the intended applications of Raman spectroscopy, and the achievements of the individual working groups of the DFG research group, followed by other research groups that also will use the new Raman system for innovative scientific projects.
