Optical Modulation based Computational THz Imaging with State-of-the-Art Image Reconstruction

Applicant Dr. Sven Augustin
Subject Area Measurement Systems
Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Term from 2019 to 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 429474414

The objective of the project is to develop new methods that advance Terahertz (THz) imaging using an optical modulation approach further. Thereby, the advancement is projected to reach a point where optical modulation can be used as a standard approach for applications like THz microscopy/nanoscopy, THz imaging spectroscopy and THz security imaging to name just a few prominent application examples. Within the project knowledge will be developed that enables the use of optical modulation as a default for the applications mentioned above proving that the THz optical modulation approach investigated here is able to supersede established methods in terms of imaging speed and image fidelity, etc.The successful project work will be reflected by two deliverables, which will be published in adequate peer-reviewed journals. Within the project images in a near-field modality (deliverable 1) showing spatial resolution < 10um as well as a stand-off distance modality of a few meters imaging distance (deliverable 2) showing images of a mannequin, acquired in just a few seconds are compared in order to judge the applicability of the project’s results for these extreme cases.
