Rashi´s Bible Interpretation in Yalkut Shimoni on Psalms.
Final Report Abstract
In this project, the Yalkut Shimoni, a comprehensive biblical commentary on the Tanakh, was compared to the commentary by Rashi (Rabbi Solomon ben Isaac, 1040-1105). Rashi is still one of the most important Jewish commentators on the Bible and the Talmud. The Yalkut Shimoni has been dated to different centuries (10th to 13th century) as the authorship has been unclear till today. The comparison focuses on the commentaries on the Psalms, as they hold a special position in liturgy and religious interpretation. Both commentaries are of immense importance for the history of Hebrew Bible interpretation and have shaped the personal and religiouscultural identity of Jews for centuries. Due to questions regarding dating and authorship of the Jalkut Shimoni also the discussions in 19th century of the Jewish Science scholars had to be considered. This discussion took place in the context of the contemporary interest in rabbinic and medieval Jewish literature and required the evaluation of additional sources, including private and letters and notes, as well as publications in contemporary journals and publications. This required a new, innovative approach to digital dataprocessing, as well as the quantitative and qualitative analysis and visualization of the results in digital form for presentation in the scholarly community.
