Final Report Abstract

The ethnographic research project dealt with the social mechanisms and cultural logics of everyday life constructions of people released from prison. The project aimed to understand how people construct a meaningful everyday life (understood as routinized and naturally lived reality) for themselves after their release from prison. Starting from the social position 'ex-prisoner', the project focussed on social constraints that make the construction of everyday life after prison difficult: interactive and structural stigmatization, moral condemnation, poverty, surplus of meaningless time, uncertain imaginations of the future. Furthermore, the project showed that, in the context of social constraints, people use agentive agency to build meaningful daily lives after prison: Tactics of stigma management, creative ways of dealing with poverty and surplus of time, moral positioning, articulations of hope as meaningful orientations towards the future. Based on ethnographically dense insights into post-prisonlifeworlds, the project argues that everyday life after prison is a world characterized by permanent uncertainty and reflexive routine, which can be conceptualized as a state of permanent liminality.
