HPC / Storage System

Term Funded in 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 430250945

This proposal addresses the procurement of a storage and high performance computer system for the department of "Physics and chemistry of the atmosphere" within the Institute of Environmental Physics/ Remote Sensing, at the University of Bremen, IUP/IFE-UB. This department conducts nationally and internationally funded “state of the art research” in the fields of atmospheric physics and chemistry: a particular research focus being the use of the remote sensing data about the composition of the Earth's atmosphere to improve our knowledge of the geophysical processes, which determine the conditions at the Earth’s surface and within its atmosphere. A wide range of atmospheric research is undertaken, which utilises knowledge about the composition of the troposphere, the stratosphere and the mesosphere, retrieved from measurements by space-based instrumentation. The complex nature of many atmospheric processes requires global observations at an adequate spatial and temporal sampling. In the framework of the European Union "Copernicus" programme, managed by the European Commission a long-term series of Earth observation satellites called "Sentinel" is being constructed. The Copernicus missions designed to deliver measurements of the atmospheric composition are the Sentinel 3, Sentinel-4, Sentinel- 5 p and the Sentinel 5- IUP/IFE-UB has helped these missions and been involved in their implementation. This current generation of Earth observation satellites are characterized by spatial and/or spectral high-resolution measurements that lead to great demand for mass storage and computing power. Consequently, the main requirements for the system are: a) 2.7 PByte mass storage for the storage of the satellite data; b) high computing power of the HPC system for the analysis of trace gas columns, trace gas profiles, greenhouse gases, and aerosol, clouds and soil parameters; c) a high-performance connection of the storage of media to the HPC system is essential.
