400 MHz NMR Spectrometer Console

Subject Area Molecular Chemistry
Basic Research in Biology and Medicine
Term Funded in 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 431353207

The NMR facility at the Institute of Organic Chemistry at the University of Münster processes numerous NMR samples daily and provides essential support in designing experiments and answering spectroscopic questions. The 400 MHz NMR spectrometer in question was purchased in 2006 and is planned to be replaced in 2020. The spectrometer is optimized for automated operation to acquire 1D and 2D NMR spectra. The application to upgrade the console allows the existing shielded magnet to be maintained and reused. The equipment requested has automatically tuneable HFX sample heads with high X or H/F sensitivity and autosampler is specially designed for efficiency with a wide range of detailed NMR measurements. A third fluorine channel is essential to facilitate the analysis of multiply-fluorinated and per-fluorinated organic compounds to support this rapidly expanding research area in Münster. The usual fluorine coupling in the carbon spectrum for this substance class can thus be completely suppressed, allowing for fast and efficient NMR spectroscopic analysis. This ensures that the high field spectrometers are free for more challenging and demanding research projects. In addition to substance identification, the spectrometer is used for structure elucidation and, above all, for the provision of publication-relevant data. In addition to the research groups at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, the spectrometer supports other researchers within the university as part of co-ordinated research initiatives.
