Komplexe Modellkatalysatoren für die selektive Umwandlung erneuerbarer Brennstoffe
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Das Ziel dieses Projekts war die Entwicklung fortschrittlicher Elektrokatalysatoren für die selektive Oxidation von Alkoholen wie Ethanol in alkalischen Umgebungen. Diese Forschung ist besonders relevant für die Verbesserung der Effizienz von Energiespeichersystemen, wie beispielsweise direkten Alkoholbrennstoffzellen. Unsere Studien konzentrierten sich darauf, drei zentrale Funktionen auf der Nanoskala zu integrieren: (1) effektive Alkoholbindung, (2) kontrollierte Spaltung von Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Bindungen und (3) gezielte Oxidation gebildeter Intermediate. Um dies zu erreichen, entwickelten wir Modellsysteme im atomaren Maßstab, darunter geordnete Oxidfilme, Metalloxid-Nanopartikel und Metall-Nanopartikel auf Oxidträgern. Eine bedeutende Entdeckung war die entscheidende Rolle der elektronischen Metall-Träger-Wechselwirkungen (EMSI) für die Stabilität und Aktivität der Katalysatoren. Beispielsweise bildeten Platin (Pt) und Palladium (Pd), abgeschieden auf Cobaltoxid (Co₃O₄), stabilere Strukturen. Allerdings muss die EMSI feinabgestimmt werden, um die elektrokatalytische Aktivität zu erhalten. Zudem konnten durch die Einführung bimetallischer Legierungen – wie Rhodium (Rh) in Kombination mit Palladium – zusätzliche Funktionalitäten integriert werden. Ein weiterer Durchbruch war die Entwicklung einer neuartigen in-situ-Spektroskopietechnik, die die Messung atomar definierter Modellsysteme unter Betriebsbedingungen ermöglicht. Dieser Ansatz zeigte, dass sich die Oxidationszustände der Katalysatoren in Reaktionsumgebungen von denen in konventionellen ex-situ-Experimenten signifikant unterscheiden können. Diese Erkenntnisse tragen zur Entwicklung effizienterer und stabilerer Elektrokatalysatoren bei. Langfristig könnten ähnliche Strategien auf die elektrokatalytische Umwandlung anderer Reaktanten angewendet werden, um die Energieumwandlung und die Elektrifizierung chemischer Prozesse weiter voranzutreiben.
