Final Report Abstract

During her lifetime, Anna de Noailles (1876-1933) was one of the most recognised protagonists of the literary field in Belle Époque Paris as a successful writer, literary politician and patron of the arts and young authors. As the author with a Greek-Romanian background has hardly been recognised by researchers to date, this project is the first to systematically explore Anna de Noaille's special achievement as a writer of the Belle Époque as well as her function as a protagonist of literary modernism. The aim is to examine how Anna de Noailles took a stand as an author and protagonist in a male-dominated literary field and provided central impulses for the emerging literary modernism: On the one hand, by reformulating philosophy, aesthetics, material and motifs in an idiosyncratic way from a female perspective and, on the other hand, as a salonière, critic and patron of young writers as well as through her social commitment, by outlining and decisively shaping the field of forces of a massively changing Parisian literary scene. The main focus is on her novels, prose pieces and autofictions, which have received little attention to date and in which a further dimension of her special position clearly emerges. Because of her origins, Anna de Noailles was stylised as an exotic Oriental - a role that she was able to stage deliberately, as numerous portraits of avant-garde artists of the time make clear. However, this role also led to her being associated by literary critics with stereotypical judgements of boundless sensuality, irrationality, lack of morality and threatening femininity. The project sheds light on her conflicts of identity and legitimisation as a French writer with roots in a discursively ‘orientalised’ cultural space.
