Integrative taxonomy – Parthenogenetic radiations and ‘species’ delimitation using multimodal data
Final Report Abstract
Most animal species are traditionally described based on their morphology, leading to what is known as "morphospecies." However, these morphospecies often consist of multiple genetically distinct populations, referred to as cryptic species complexes (CSCs). Integrative taxonomy seeks to delineate and name distinct species within these CSCs by utilizing and combining various types of data (multimodal data), such as morphological, chemical, and molecular information. CSCs are particularly prevalent in phylogenetic groups with relatively simple morphologies or in groups where morphology is strongly shaped by selective pressures. Additionally, the reproductive mode (sexual vs. parthenogenetic) plays a role in influencing rates of character evolution, diversity, and speciation. This project had two primary objectives: (1) How can multimodal data be used to detect and describe distinct species within CSCs of micro-arthropods? (2) How does reproductive mode (sexual vs. parthenogenetic) influence character diversification and the prevalence of CSCs in oribatid mites? With a high number of co-existing sexual and numerous ancient parthenogenetic species, multiple instances of parthenogenetic radiations, and a well-documented prevalence of CSCs, oribatid mites (particularly the Crotoniidae) serve as an ideal model system to explore these broader questions.
