Functionalisation of MgO-C refractories based on recycled raw materails and their impact on steel cleanless

Subject Area Glass, Ceramics and Derived Composites
Term from 2020 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 437121912

In this transfer project the application of MgO-C refractories based on recycled MgO-C raw materials will be investigated. The use of recycled MgO-C raw materials offers economial as well as ecological benefits especially by avoiding the expensive fabrication of MgO materials in an arc furncace. Further, the recycled material will be less reactive due to the fact that reactions have already taken place in the steel/slag-system at elevated temperatures. As a result, a lower amount of inclusions in steel is expected. The focus of the project is dealing with the investigation of inclusions in the steel based on different MgO-C refractories with fresh and recycled materials. Another task is the improvement of the thermal shock performance and especially by using nanoscalic and semiconducting material additions. Also the interactions with the impurities of the recycled raw material and the binder as well as the carbon of the MgO-C refractories will be investigated especially in means of the population of inclusions in the steel melt. In case of a positive impact of the additions according to the thermal shock performance less „fresh“ binder as well less carbon could be used in the future in MgO-C refractories based on recycled raw materials.
