We propose a novel measure for evaluating whether digital system latencies (e.g., in virtual reality) lie within acceptable bounds. We record the user’s brain activity via electroencephalography (EEG), and extract sensory responses that reflect the degree to which the user perceives system responses as expected consequences of own actions. Compared to previous approaches, this permits an unobtrusive on-line evaluation and is more robust against unspecific variations in user state. The key research aim during the first funding period is to establish and validate the new approach in one exemplary environment, the STISIM driving Simulator.
