Process for consistent cross-generational development of systems of objectives for product portfolios

Subject Area Engineering Design, Machine Elements, Product Development
Term since 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 437943992

In the real development environment, the further development of product portfolios does not take place precisely in line with long-term strategic planning. Strategic planning is faced with a volatile environment. Various triggers, such as new customer requirements or technological change, influence further development at different levels of the product portfolio. The synchronization of the levels and the alignment to a consistent target system represent the central challenge in the future-proof further development of product portfolios. The challenge lies in linking objectives and boundary conditions across the various levels of abstraction in product portfolios and keeping them consistent over time across system generations. As the planning horizon increases, so do uncertainties regarding new product lines and product families. Developers have a high degree of design freedom, but also a high degree of uncertainty about the performance and feasibility of the new generation. This area of tension leads to uncertainty regarding the time of market entry and the expected performance. Against this background, the aim of the project is to analyze the structurally and temporally consistent further development and to develop suitable approaches to support target system formation for the cross-generational development of product portfolios.
