Exploring the future. Future laboratories as mode of experimenting with visions for good life beyond existing society
Final Report Abstract
The research project aimed to ethnographically explore visions and practices of the future in contemporary society, particularly within popular cultural fields of "future exploration," where alternative future scenarios are developed and tested. It assumed that the erosion of political and social affiliations leads to a fragmentation of future concepts. In this context, new spaces emerge for experimenting with alternative future models. The project investigated this development through two subprojects: utopian festivals and prepping. Subproject I focused on utopian festivals, where participants develop and test alternative visions of a "good life." In five festivals across Germany, the study explored, through participant observation and interviews, how future concepts are negotiated and practiced during these festivals. It became evident that participants did not aim for fixed societal blueprints for a good life; instead, they tested practices that challenge existing everyday systems, such as exchange logics or performance-driven thinking. Subproject II examined the prepper movement, where people prepare for potential catastrophe scenarios. Especially after the pandemic, prepping became a mass phenomenon. The ethnographic research revealed how future imaginaries are embedded in the everyday lives of preppers, linked to a deep skepticism about society and political institutions. Practices like stockpiling and emergency preparedness were found to be central in this movement. Both case studies highlight a fundamental distrust in established political institutions. In both fields, participants primarily rely on individual solutions: preppers focus on crisis preparedness, while festival-goers aim for societal change through personal lifestyle interventions. Despite the political positioning (prepping being more "right-wing," utopia festivals more "left-wing"), both movements share a focus on self-empowering practices, rather than promoting a specific political agenda. When compared, both scenarios function as "future laboratories", where participants can take responsibility, experiment with new ways of life, and create concrete orientations for acting in an uncertain future. The project combined cultural studies of the future with "moral anthropology," making a significant contribution to the sociological perspective on future imaginaries. The results of the project garnered significant interest both within academia and in the public sphere. It led to numerous scholarly and popular science publications, as well as collaborations with political and artistic initiatives. The project also developed ethnographic methods for studying future and societal imaginaries, which were shared through workshops and publications.
