The Protein Analysis Unit (Zentrallabbor für Proteinanalytik, ZfP) was established in 2002 at the Adolf Butenandt Institute (ABI) of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) of Munich as a central service unit of five DFG funded Collaborative Research Centers (413, 594, 596, 646 and TR5). In the meantime, the ZfP has established itself as the first Core Facility of the new Biomedical Center (BMC) and was integrated into the research infrastructure database of the DFG in 2012 (RI_00089_ZfP_München). The ZfP provides its expertise and services not only to groups with the BMC but also to other groups within the LMU and entertains a number of national and international collaborations. In addition to the routine analysis of proteins and polypeptides, much of the work of the ZfP is the detailed analysis of proteins and protein mixtures and the mapping and characterization of post-translational modifications. Therefore, it is a major goal of the ZfP to develop new methods for dealing with these issues and to establish them in routine analysis. In order to maintain the ZfP as an efficient and successful service unit at the medical faculty of the LMU, it is crucial that the equipment of the ZfP always meets the highest technical standards. The new high resolution mass spectrometer is intended to replace an obsolete LC MS system (Orbitap Classic) and at the same time significantly improve the capabilities of the ZfP for deep proteome analysis and the characterisation of post-translational modifications as well as protein-protein crosslinks.
