Settlements of the Zarubintsy Culture: Studies on the settlement of the middle Dnjepr, upper Dnjepr and Polesian regions during the late Pre-Roman Iron and early Roman Age.
Final Report Abstract
The period from the 3rd century BC to the 1st century AD is undoubtedly of great importance for the history of the Middle Dnieper, Upper Dnieper and Polesia regions. It is characterised in a special way by cultural and economic changes, and probably migration movements into this area. As a consequence of these processes, the Zarubincy culture was formed at the end of the 3rd century BC. The archaeological sources of the middle and upper Dnieper region of the younger pre-Roman Iron Age and the early Imperial period with sites such as Zarubincy, Čaplin, Pilipenkova Gora, Pirogov or Remel' have attracted the attention of a number of researchers from various European countries. Over the course of more than a century, important publications on cultural relations have been produced. Nevertheless, it must be clearly stated that central aspects of the Zarubincy culture, such as its origins and chronology, have not been fully clarified. This also explains the contradictory discussions in the specialist literature. As no synthetic study on the settlements of the Zarubincy culture has yet been carried out, my aim with this project was to analyse these settlements for the first time on a detailed and systematic basis and to close this research gap.
