Final Report Abstract

The research project explored the presence of Theologic Philosophy and Philosophic Theology in patristic thought (East and West). The patristic testimonies of the Corpus Hermeticum were comprehensively analysed for the first time in this context. The systematic analysis covered the following authors: Athenagoras of Athens, Clement of Alexandria, Origen of Alexandria, Lactantius, Didymus of Alexandria (including Pseudo-Didymus), Synesius of Cyrene und Cyril of Alexandria. The analysis of the remaining patristic testimonies on Hermes Trismegistus revealed a number of other new results. The research project showed the essential participation of Christianity in the pluralisation of the concept of philosophy during the imperial period, using the example of the patristic encounter with the two aforementioned forms of thought. The research project has shed fundamental light on the history of the impact of the Corpus Hermeticum in the patristic tradition.
