Increasing the strength of magnesium wrought alloy components by precipitation hardening

Subject Area Primary Shaping and Reshaping Technology, Additive Manufacturing
Term since 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 442927742

Increasing environmental awareness and rising costs of fossil fuels have forced the automobile industry to break new ground for some years to reduce fuel consumption. Modern lightweight concepts in vehicle construction make a significant contribution to reducing vehicle weight, thereby reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and the emission of gases such as CO2. Magnesium alloys are already used in the automotive industry as cast alloys and, more recently, as formed sheet metal. However, the achievable strengths of the available magnesium sheet materials do not match those of higher strength aluminum alloys. One approach to increase the strength of magnesium alloys are suitable heat treatments which use precipitation hardening and thus increase strength. The mechanisms of solidification are based essentially on solid solution hardening and / or precipitation strengthening. Therefore, the aim of the research project is to increase the strength of formed components made of magnesium sheets. For this purpose, on the one hand, a hardenable magnesium sheet based on Mg-Zn-Al and its production process will be developed on the basis of the cast-rolling process. As additional alloying elements to increase strength, Mn and Ca will be applied. The cooperation of the IFUM and the HZG is that the HZG investigates the alloy and process development with respect to a precipitation-hardenable sheet metal alloy, and the IFUM examines the forming technology of the magnesium sheet and the heat treatment to increase the strength. Since an assessment of the magnesium components in terms of their strength can be made only after the forming, a close cooperation with multiple iteration loops is striven.
