Animals as Companions. Animal-Human Relationships: Between Liveliness and Normalization.

In recent decades, Germany has witnessed a surge in private pet ownership, signalling a profound societal shift. Various academic disciplines have noted that this trend signifies a turn towards nature, which represents a movement away from a more and more technologised world. However, the question of why people attribute a status to animals comparable to that of family members or friends remains largely unanswered. The project empirically investigated how people refer and relate to animals and how these acquire the status of companions. Instead of adhering to common classifications of animals into species and genera or ‘show animals’, ‘farm animals’ and ‘pets’, the definitions provided by the animal owners themselves guided the sampling. As a result, various animal species such as dogs, horses, cats and small animals were included, as well as chickens, snakes and snails. The owners were interviewed using guided, semi-narrative interviews; in addition, expert discussions (ethology, veterinary medicine) were conducted. Interviews with animal service providers shed light on the dynamics of triadic co-operation between species. The study was conducted across Germany in urban and rural areas. The findings provide insights into the mutual influences between animals and humans. They support an understanding of social relations that emphasises relations and levelling between the respective ‘others’ rather than oppositions. The central result is that animals have an influence on human life plans and lifestyles that is comparable to that of humans. Along three modes of companionship, the project demonstrates that owners make targeted adjustments to the requirements of pet ownership in their everyday routines as well as farreaching changes in the way they organise their lives. These changes affect the temporal, spatial and social dimensions of conducting everyday life, ranging from the choice and arrangement of living spaces to career changes and family planning. Service providers play a part in shaping these animal-human relationships. They impart knowledge about pet care and intend to change perceptions and practices regarding animals; they co-constitute the status of animals. At the same time, adjustments can also be observed in the way service providers organise their lives: pet owners as paying customers, but above all animals, induce changes in practices that can extend to a realignment of the business model. The findings of the project make tangible what lies behind the currently much-discussed human-nature relationships and what developmental trends emerge in humans' positioning in the world.
