DAWs in Bioinformatics can benefit enormously from workflow optimization, for instance by distributing computation for embarrassingly parallel problems. In the first phase of FONDA, we developed methods to rewrite a given workflow developed for an infrastructure A into one suitable for a target infrastructure B based on characteristics of the DAW and characteristics of the infrastructures. Recent years, however, showed that science also must focus on another optimization goal: Improving sustainability by reducing energy consumption. This subproject will lay the grounds for energy-reducing DAW optimization in Bioinformatics. We will characterize the energy-consumption behavior of Bioinformatics tools, research methods that estimate the energy consumption of a given DAW, and allow workflow steering based on individual preferences.
