The academic goal of the following project is an annotated, text-critical hybrid edition of the extensive correspondence (from 1887 to 1933) of Protestant theologian and philosopher Paul Tillich (1886-1965). Through this hybrid edition, research on Tillich will be given a new foundation and the interpretation of his oeuvre will benefit from a broad range of innovative new perspectives. The project has three foundational pillars: firstly, the edition of the correspondence; secondly, open access and printed publications; thirdly, an academic exploration of Tillich’s exchange of letters. To achieve this, funding for three postdoctoral positions and three student assistant positions (60h = 40h Vienna; 20h Munich) for the period of 36 months is requested. The holders of these positions will compile and develop the open access edition in cooperation with the De Gruyter publishing company (Berlin/Boston). Their work will involve constituting and editing Tillich’s letters from their original manuscripts and compiling a critical apparatus. Exploratory notes and editorial reports, which will contain paragraphs on editorial activities, the formation of the correspondence, and its historical background in terms of intellectual context, theology, culture and politics, will also be written. Three workshops will support the editorial work based in Munich and Vienna and inform the annotation of the correspondence.
