The University Hospital Cologne is the largest European Center for clinical care of esophageal adenocarcinoma. The laboratory of Genomic Pathology performs detailed transcriptomic analyses of esophageal adenocarcinoma and other gastrointestinal tumors. Here, the interaction of individual cell types (immune cells, epithelial cells, cancer-associated fibroblasts) of the tumor micro-milieu are of particular interest. The laboratory of Genomic Pathology is in a unique position to access fresh, treatment naïve resected specimen and endoscopic biopsies of a large patient cohort of this tumor entity. Of particular interest is the influence of cancer-associated fibroblasts on tumor development of the esophageal adenocarcinoma. The multi chrome fluorescence-based flowcytometry cell sorting is an essential basis for the targeted separation of the different cell types from clinical specimen. For this purpose, we require a user friendly device with sufficient excitatory lasers, detectors and filters, as specified in document 5 (Geräte- und Firmenwahl), the possibility to sort into up to four groups and flexibility to accommodate the ad hoc analysis of clinical samples. We have the required space and personnel available to operate such a device (document 1, Forschung). We apply for funding of this device to continue and enhance our research in this area.
