Distinct subsets of memory-like and terminally exhausted T cells have been identified in chronic infections with hepatitis B virus, hepatitis D virus, hepatitis C virus, and hepatitis E virus. Based on the hypothesis that stem-like cells control virus-specific CD8+ T cell immunity in acute vs. chronic viral hepatitis, we now aim to identify correlates of T cell stem cells that could be exploited for therapeutic approaches in the long-term.
