Research map of models for modelling embodiment and function of technical systems to support linked model usage

Subject Area Engineering Design, Machine Elements, Product Development
Term since 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 446789859

It is often difficult to link new research to existing research results of model research in embodiment design. This problem arises from the diversity of available models and the lack of a superordinate structure, which makes it difficult to establish new research projects. As a result, the research leverage of individual research projects is low for the entire model research, even if a high model-specific research leverage can be generated. For the future of this field of research, it is necessary to support the creation of research leverage by improving the possibilities of linking to already existing research results. In this way, models can be compared and linking potentials can be identified. A model federalism across the entire diversity of models in design will thus become possible and, in particular, the models developed and used in Germany will become usable for the international research community. In addition, the compatibility of product and process model research will increase and synergy potentials can be used.A solution approach to this superordinate structure is a research map of existing models, which is to be developed in this research project. This research map of the models in embodiment design can be used as a structured overview to identify commonalities, gaps and linking possibilities of these models. The basis of the research project is a literature analysis from preliminary work. The present research map is based on information provided by model researchers in the literature on their models. In order to achieve a more objective and uniform description of models in embodiment design of technical systems, these models will be used for modelling using two example systems. The created models are handed over to the respective model researchers for examination and completion. The research map is then expanded and evaluated in an expert workshop. Finally, the evaluated research map is made available to model researchers.
