C7 represents the central simulation project in the CRC/TRR and will develop methods to ensure the applicability of the models devised in the other relevant projects to large-scale systems. In addition, project C7 will combine the fast, anisotropic porous medium approach developed in C5 with the higher-resolution, but more expensive Immersed Boundary Method in an innovative way. By such combination, the time and space dependence of the morphology of polydisperse, moving beds can be appropriately accounted for at reasonable computational costs and will lead to an accurate description of the interstitial flow field. In this respect, the capability of the Very Large Eddy Method will be evaluated to predict the characteristics of the typically strongly inhomogeneous flow field within packed beds and at their interface to an unconfined region without particles. Because the calculation of particle-internal processes, especially in large-scale systems, can dominate computing time, a strategy will be devised to define the necessary level of detail in single-particle reaction models of thermally thick particles. Finally, new time-saving tabulation approaches will be proposed.
