The normative foundations of property: Liberty, common and sustainable ownership (A06)
Subject Area
Theoretical Philosophy
Term
since 2021
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 424638267
A still-relevant strategy of reasoning employed frequently by classic theories of ownership derives ownership and its legitimisation from the concept of liberty. The project explores this relationship from opposed perspectives. On the one hand, exemplary theories are used to a) critically question the aforementioned notion, b) contextualise it within the history of philosophy, and c) challenge it by applying non-European philosophical traditions. On the other hand, the project uses a normative notion of freedom to develop common and sustainable approaches to ownership and derive obligations of sustainability from the supposed relationship itself, rather than using them to argue against the concept of ownership.
